As of 31 January 2010, the Earth's population is estimated by the United States Census Bureau to be 6,799,700,000.
That gives use
235,770 ft2 per person in the world.
1096 ft2 per person if the entire world population lived in just Texas.

tennis ball has a diameter of 6.9 cm which is close to 27.25% of the basketball. (The
tennis ball is actually 28.8% the size of the basketball.) These values are very close to

Apollo 8 (launched Dec 21, 1968) was the first human spaceflight mission to escape from the gravitational field of planet Earth; the first to be captured by and escape from the gravitational field of another celestial body; and the first crewed voyage to return to planet Earth from another celestial body - Earth's Moon. The three-man crew of Mission Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders became the first humans to see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes, as well as the first humans to see planet Earth from beyond low Earth orbit. The mission was accomplished with the first manned launch of a Saturn V rocket. Apollo 8 was the second manned mission of the Apollo Program.

The particles in Saturn's rings are composed primarily of water ice and range from microns to meters in size.  Saturn was the first planet observed to have rings. It wasn't until 1977 that it was discovered that Uranus also had rings. Later the rings of Jupiter and Neptune were also observed.

Explanation: Was Devils Tower once an explosive volcano? Famous for its appearance in films such as Close Encounters, the origin of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA is still debated, with a leading hypothesis holding that it is a hardened lava plume that probably never reached the surface to become a volcano. The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense volcanic neck has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High above, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy arches across the sky. Many notable sky objects are visible, including dark strands of the Pipe Nebula and the reddish Lagoon Nebula to the tower's right. Green grass and trees line the moonlit foreground, while clouds appear near the horizon to the tower's left. Unlike many other international landmarks, mountaineers are permitted to climb Devils Tower.

Explanation: Gazing out from within the Milky Way, our own galaxy's true structure is difficult to discern. But an ambitious survey effort with the Spitzer Space Telescope now offers convincing evidence that we live in a large galaxy distinguished by two main spiral arms (the Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus arms) emerging from the ends of a large central bar. In fact, from a vantage point that viewed our galaxy face-on, astronomers in distant galaxies would likely see the Milky Way as a two-armed barred spiral similar to this artist's illustration. Previous investigations have identified a smaller central barred structure and four spiral arms. Astronomers still place the Sun about a third of the way in from the Milky Way's outer edge, in a minor arm called the Orion Spur. To locate the Sun and identify the Milky Way's newly mapped features, just place your cursor over the image.

VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. This is the largest known star and one of the most luminous stars known. It is located about 1.5 kiloparsecs (or 5,000 light-years) from Earth.
Its size is estimated at 1800 to 2100 solar radii (radius of our sun).
The solar radius is about 110 times the radius of the Earth.
To illustrate, if our Sun was replaced with VY Canis Majoris, its surface would extend to the orbit of Saturn.

The Crab Nebula lies about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus.
Crab Nebula - Explanation: The Crab Nebula is cataloged as M1, the first object on Charles Messier's famous list of things which are not comets. In fact, the cosmic Crab is now known to be a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the death explosion of a massive star. Light from that stellar catastrophe was first witnessed by astronomers on planet Earth in the year 1054.

The Sombrero Galaxy – 50 million light years away from Earth.
Explanation: Why does the Sombrero Galaxy look like a hat? Reasons include the Sombrero's unusually large and extended central bulge of stars, and dark prominent dust lanes that appear in a disk that we see nearly edge-on. Billions of old stars cause the diffuse glow of the extended central bulge. Close inspection of the bulge in the above photograph shows many points of light that are actually globular clusters. M104's spectacular dust rings harbor many younger and brighter stars, and show intricate details astronomers don't yet fully understand. The very center of the Sombrero glows across the electromagnetic spectrum, and is thought to house a large black hole. Fifty million-year-old light from the Sombrero Galaxy can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of Virgo.

Voyager 2 – the voyager space craft were launched by NASA in 1977 originally to visit the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn. A highly favorable trajectory that resulted from its flyby of Saturn convinced mission controllers to extend the mission to visit Uranus and Neptune as well. The surprising discoveries that this vessel made, and especially its rendezvous with four gas giants, make it the most productive rocket probe ever launched.

Image of Earth in a light ray from the sun – taken from 4 billions miles away by Voyager 1 (June, 6 1990)
This narrow-angle color image of the Earth, dubbed 'Pale Blue Dot', is a part of the first ever 'portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyager's great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun. This blown-up image of the Earth was taken through three color filters -- violet, blue and green -- and recombined to produce the color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification.
