As of 1999 the human MHC loci were sequenced.
Gene conversion using template DNA that resides elsewhere in the genome is responsible for the creation of new MHC genes.
MHC editions are not random. The changes vary greatly from one allele to the next, and are localized to specific areas that are rich in CpG nucleotide dimers.
